PTRC News for 2014

Orlando, FL

University of Central Florida
Submitted by: Hal Mendelsohn

University of Central Florida LibraryIn addition to assisting individuals with patent and trademark searching, my job responsibilities as a Reference Librarian includes face to face and telephone reference service, collection development and library instruction. The individuals I usually assist with patent and trademark questions are community members and students. At UCF, there is a department called the Office of Research and Commercialization. If a professor has a patented idea, s/he will work with the Research side of the Office of Research and Commercialization.

100 Year Old Trademarks Posters2013-2014 has been a quiet year for the Orono PTRC. I spent the lion’s share of my PTRC time working on the PTRCA website, still trying to address the multitude of problems that arose with the migration to a new server before last year’s seminar. That has proven to be a major headache! I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the publications committee volunteers who’ve stepped up to help: Robert Berry, Hal Mendelsohn, Continue reading

Rutgers University
Submitted by: Ellen Calhoun

On July 1, 2013 the Old Queens Bell was rung to mark a historic event for higher education in New Jersey – the integration of Rutgers with most of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. On that date the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act went into effect, changing the historic configuration of UMDNJ schools and units. Seven of the eight UMDNJ schools became part of a restructured Rutgers University. Continue reading

Rochester, NY

Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County
Submitted by: Kate Meddaugh

The Central Library is undergoing some major changes over the next five years or so. Divisions are being re-located, we’re creating a Technology Lab and Computer Center, and the Science and History Division will be housing 100% more computers than we currently have. Amidst all this change, I am delighted to say the Carlson Patent and Trademark Center will remain within the Science and History Division where it’s been since we became a PTRC in 1999. Continue reading

Submitted by: Dave Morrison

The Salt Lake City PTRC is part of the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah. The Marriott Library was first designated a PDL in 1984 – trademarks were not yet a part of the Patent Depository program. In subsequent years we were renamed a PTDL library, and now a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC). The Marriott Library has also been a Government Printing Office (GPO) depository since 1893; a U.S. Department of Energy depository; Continue reading

As a PTDL/PTRC since the 1980s, we are pleased to provide intellectual property information to our area.

This year marked our move to our long awaited new Central Library building, officially known as the San Diego Central Library at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Common (honoring the generous donors
who helped make our wonderful building a reality). Our new facility includes a separate area for government documents and the PTRC that is much more visible. Continue reading

Seattle, WA

University of Washington, Engineering Library
Submitted by: Christina Byrne

The Seattle PTRC is located in the Engineering Library at the University of Washington.

The last year has been one of building improvements and library systems change.

Our “re-imagination” of the first floor of the Engineering Library is complete with new furniture, outlets and a reconfigured computing area, as well as a combined Information Desk. We are still planning on a PTRC Research Area to accommodate a PTRC-dedicated workstation and a small work space. Continue reading

Oklahoma State University LibraryThe Oklahoma State University Library has been a Patent and Trademark Depository Library since 1956. We are housed in the main University Library and are part of the Government Documents Department, a regional depository for federal government documents.

Researchers/inventors make appointments with us to work one-on-one, and I have been handling a great deal of this by phone and email. Our website includes most of our service information and links to information for inventors at USPTO: http://www.library.okstate.edu/patents/  Continue reading
