The University of Utah and the J. Willard Marriott Library have been a PTRC since 1984. The big news from Utah is that the Marriott Library continues to increase its outreach and has hired a new science librarian with an interest in patent searching. Ms. Tallie Casucci comes from the Eccles Health Science Library and is the library liaison to the University’s nationally ranked Entertainment Arts & Engineering program, Biomedical Engineering, College of Health, Center for Technology & Venture Commercialization, as well as providing library and patent searching support to our statewide Bench-to-Bedside (B2B) competition.
The B2B program, our statewide medical device competition, continues to grow and expand. Over fifty teams competed on the competition night at the Utah State Capital on April 9, 2018. Teams from The University of Utah, Utah State University, Weber State University, Utah Valley University, Southern Utah University, and Brigham Young University. For the second year in a row, two high schools also participated—Rowland Hall and Juan Diego Catholic High School. With a new competition year starting in the fall of 2018, Tallie and Alfred have already helped several teams.
Working with Jen Kirk at Utah State University, Alfred taught a patent class to USU students, staff, and faculty on October 11, 2018. There were ten participants. It is hoped that this will be an annual fall event.
In 2018, Alfred and Tallie have taught or co-taught classes for Research Education, Colleges of Engineering, Health, and Business, workshops for our B2B students, undergraduate Innovation Scholars, undergraduate, and Honors courses, such as “Biomedical Engineering Design” and “Innovation Roadmap.” Materials for some of these classes can be found on our Marriott Library Subject Guide. Both Alfred and Tallie continue to provide support in a variety of ways to the Center for Technology & Venture Commercialization (TVC). In 2018, the University of Utah was granted 61 patents and licensed 69 different technologies.
In Fall 2018, we updated our Science & Engineering Resources brochure with new information including the PTRC. In order to meet more students, staff, and faculty, Tallie, Alfred, and others started outreach tabling in other campus buildings to promote library resources and services. We interacted with nearly 1300 people in the fall 2018 semester, over 1000 people in the spring 2019. Many of these people do not physically visit the library. Both Tallie and Alfred have provided further support to these patrons.
