Emily Dovermann, Arlene Nagamine and I send a fond aloha to all the survivors of the Polar Vortex. We have been reading how Mother Nature is quite the trickster.
After many, many months of struggling with our PubWEST, and PubEAST connection, we think that the new method of accessing both databases through SEAS will finally allow us to use both of them. We can now log on through our dedicated Patent and Trademark Workstation and our public access computer. We are anticipating being able, once the hard drive template is fully developed, to allow first-time access to our other Federal Depository Libraries in the Hawaii State Public Library System at Lihue and Kahului Public Libraries. This procedure will extend our PTRC materials to three of the four major Hawaiian Islands and may not require certified Patent Agents and Attorneys from the Neighbor Islands to visit us on Oahu in order to connect with the databases. We are looking forward to being a more fully engaged and active member of the PTRC family and fulfilling our original mandate of providing patent and trademark resources to Hawaii.
We were lucky to again have the services of attorneys Seth Reiss and Tracey Ohta to present a program titled “Intellectual Property Rights & Early Hawaii Patents” on September 26, 2013. A smaller crowd of 24 people stayed to listen to this interesting seminar. Our patent activity has increased since this talk. We hope to continue this trend with a rollout of our new access to PubWEST and PubEAST to our local patent agents and attorneys and Small Business Development Centers.
We received late breaking news that Emily has agreed to represent our PTRC at this year’s Patent and Trademark Training Seminar. We are looking forward to having her bring back what she learned, particularly on PubWEST, PubEAST and CPC. This will hopefully allow us to report more PTRC related activity for our next newsletter update.
For now, we are all pau,
Stewart Chun
