Rutgers University Libraries

2015 is a year with sadness and changes at Rutgers University Libraries (RUL), Piscataway, NJ

It was sad that our longtime colleague, Ellen Calhoun, passed away on December 17, 2015. Ellen joined the Rutgers Libraries in 1981 and received her tenure in 1988. She served as the primary representative to the US Patent and Trademark Resource Center since May 9, 1989. She has also worked as Circulation Librarian, Head of Reference Department, Head of Government Documents Department, Government Publications Librarian, Government Documents Librarian for the Sciences and Government Resources Librarian.

Ellen was many things – a librarian, colleague and devoted wife. She came to us from the Princeton University Library on a temporary appointment, and ended up staying for 34 Years. Government documents must have been in her DNA, because her only sister works in the Documents department at a University in Arizona. The Georgia Tech Library

We thank her contributions to Rutgers University Libraries and especially the Library of Science and Medicine. We will miss her smile and her sense of humor.
RUL has appointed Connie Wu as the primary representative to the US Patent and Trademark Resource Center starting 2016.

RUL were pleased to welcome Dr. Krisellen Maloney as our new vice president for information services and university librarian on July 15, 2015. A noted researcher, librarian, and educator, Maloney comes to Rutgers from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). We anticipate that RUL will make many changes under her leadership.

New Brunswick Libraries, one of the largest library divisions in RUL had completed structure reorganization in 2015. We hope that the new structure will enhance communications among units.

For fifth year, Connie Wu was invited by the Byrne Seminar Program at Rutgers University to provide a seminar in the Fall 2015 in the title of The ABCs of Patents to 19 freshmen. The students were introduced to various types of intellectual property (IP), with emphasis on patent. It was the most exciting and rewarding experience in Connie’s teaching practice. Connie also took 35 freshmen from her two seminars to visit Thomas Edison’s Lab in West Orange, NJ in September.

In 2015, Connie gave the following five talks concerning IP and patents:

“Publishers’ Role in Research Collaboration,” Invited talk at School of Information Management, Nanjing University, Nov. 17, 2015

“Basics of Intellectual Property Rights in U.S,” Invited talk at the Library of Shanghai University of Finance & Economics, Shanghai China, Nov. 13, 2015
