Introduction
My name is Ryan Donnelly. I have a B.A. in History and a Master of Library Science. Both these degrees are from Indiana University at Indianapolis. I just started as the PTRC Representative for the Indianapolis Public Library. The previous PTRC representative retired in mid-January 2018. Some of my other job duties include introducing entrepreneurs or business professionals to the library’s business resources for market research in one-on-one instructional sessions. I also teach computer classes on Excel, Word, and how to cut the cable T.V. cord, and replace it with online streaming options.
PTRC Located
The PTRC is located in the business section of the library on the east end of the fourth floor.
How long have you been a PTRC?
Three months by the time of the patent conference.
Activities/Highlights
The Indianapolis Public Library offers one-on-one instruction on the basics of patent research and using the PubEAST database. The library has been experimenting with a new way of promoting this one-on-one service by encouraging patrons to use the Text-A-Librarian and Ask-A-Librarian contact forms on the library’s website. This new method is another way for patrons to contact the library to schedule an introduction to patent research or have a question answered pertaining to patents.
Training Activities
As a new PTRC representative, I am still learning and have not had the opportunity to initiate any outreach to other community groups that may have an interest in patents. I met with two patrons recently who are interested in patents and gave each of them one-on-one instruction on the basics of patent research. Patrons often find one-on-one instruction rewarding because they receive specialized assistance from the librarian.
