Patent Quality Chat

The USPTO’s Patent Quality Chat webinar series continues Oct. 12, from 11 a.m. – noon ET to discuss “Examiners Provide Their Views on Prepared Applications.”
In a recent application readiness survey, we polled examiners to investigate patent application attributes that enhance the ability of examiners to efficiently and effectively do their job. Particular features in filed specifications, claims, and Information Disclosure Statement (IDS) documents were considered. Examiners across disciplines and experience levels commented on how these features helped or hindered their review of patent applications. Application readiness experts will discuss the survey results on Oct. 12. Share your ideas about how the USPTO can help you improve the quality of incoming patent applications. We look forward to hearing your feedback. Please send your input and questions to patentquality@uspto.gov before and during the event.

US Patent: 429,088

Pipe Wrench Patentee: Edward O Ely - Boston MA Granted:1890-05-27

The movable jaw is housed in a rocking frame similar to that used in the Stillson pipe wrench (viz pat. no. 95,744 and sequels). The patented features are the guide lugs behind the rocking frame carrying the movable jaw and adjusting nut, the corresponding bearing surfaces on the rocking frame, and the compression return spring inserted in the frame between the guide lugs. Produced as the 2nd version of the TRIMO pipe wrench. It evolved from nos. 397,618 and 414,663. In marketing, it was distinguished from the earlier style by the designation "A." The TRIMO EMERGENCY PIPE WRENCH with screwdriver in the handle & rare TRIMO A 6 // Patented 1889 - 90 "Gas Fitters Wrench" comes from this phase of development of the TRIMO pipe wrench. This frame was the basis for later refinements, including patent nos. 1,012,036 and 1,187,690.

US Patent: 41,747

Improved Screw-Wrench Patentee: George C. Taft - Worcester MA Granted:1864-02-23

The patent is for a "rosette" design to transfer strain from the adjusting screw to the shank of a monkey wrench. It is a refinement of the design in Taft's Nov. 10, 1863 patent 40,590. A known example incorporating these patents is marked "CHAMPION MOWER AND REAPER WRENCH // PAT ??? 1863, FEB. 23, 1864" (The November 1863 date is partially obliterated on this example.) Another known example is marked "DODGE & WELLINGTON WORCESTER // PAT"D NOV. 10, 1863 FEB. 23, 1864" These Taft patents figured prominently in various phases of the Collins / Coes patent infringement lawsuits, and were used for the L. Coes & Co. MECHANICS WRENCH in the 1870s. A bit of trivia: The "signature" on the drawing is entirely in the handwriting style of Thomas H. Dodge or someone in his employ -- compare a "typical" Taft signature (like the drawing for patent 40,590).
