Wood-turning lathe Patentees: De Witt C. Smith - St. Paul MN , Spencer E. Smith - St. Paul MN Granted:1885-07-07

The February 1886 Manufacturer and Builder had an illustrated article (p. 30) on this lathe. The lathe allows a turner to simultaneously cut about 40 work-pieces at a time. Each piece is cut to length and of regular polygonal (e.g., square, octagon) cross-section and is then clamped to the periphery of a large rotating drum. The lathe is then started and the turner can cut the profile on the outward face of each work-piece. The pieces are then rotated 90 degrees and the process is repeated. When all sides have been cut the pieces are removed from the lathe.

USPTO releases SUCCESS Act report to Congress

Report looks at participation of women, minorities, and veterans in the patent systemOctober 31, 2019 On October 31, 2019, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) transmitted to Congress a report required by the SUCCESS Act of 2018. The report looks at publicly available data on the participation rates of women, minorities, and veterans in the patent system, finding that there is limited information on these underrepresented groups. It makes a series of recommendations regarding legislation and initiatives that can help increase awareness among these groups of the importance of intellectual property and facilitate their participation in the patent system.
